Separation & Recovery of Packaged Contents and Packaging

Scrutiny of the costs and causes of material loss within processing and packaging operations, and the continual pursuit of sustainability performance improvements have made a priority of the safe and efficient recovery of packaged product and packaging that may be off-spec, mis-labeled, overruns, unsafe, or for other reasons, unsalable.

NBE ProductSaver® packaged product recovery systems provide automated and controlled removal of packaged dry or wet contents from the content’s packaging. This separation process enables an ordered recovery of the packaged contents for residual re-sale, reuse, or efficient disposal; and recovery of the packaging material for recycling, or disposal. NBE ProductSaver automatic bag emptying systems leverage the contents-and-packaging separation innovations of the ProductSaver dry product recovery systems to offer production operations a highly efficient material infeed system that empties and infeeds the contents of a few bags, up to 1,200 bags per hour. The integrated rotary separator screens the bag contents from the bag material, preventing bag waste and other contaminants from entering the production stream.

From the smallest ampoules to 150-pound, multi-wall sacks; from pillow-style tea bags or high-barrier flexible packaging to aluminum cans. Or, contents such as highly regulated powder, combustible dusts, free-flowing feed, or flow-resistant, viscous wet contents, every NBE ProductSaver product recovery system is built to the process-specific requirements of each application.

ProductSaver product recovery systems integrate package infeed, package opening, and contents and package separation processes into a single-stream product reclaim sequence. Infeed is handled by one operator; whether pallet loads, cases, or single packs, no break-pack or razor knife steps are necessary. Package opening occurs within a protected enclosure where an application-specific opening process, designed specifically for the particular package size, type, and contents, ensures maximum material release. Automated package opening enables safe, high-volume processing and eliminates the repetitive motion injuries and the escape of migrant material that are common with manual methods. The integrated ProductSaver separation technology will remove residual contents from the packaging, providing up to 99.95% of content recovery. Recovered contents are reclaimed for convenient handling. The recovered packaging material is collected and prepared for recycling or disposal.

ProductSaver: Providing Optimal Compliance Contribution

The process-specific design and materials of construction of ProductSaver systems ensure they are built to the particular processes and practices of the application and aid in attaining optimal compliance contribution (OCC). ProductSaver systems can be built to meet the FDA, cGMP definition for cleanability according to 21CFR110.40, with design features that proactively facilitate thorough cleaning, validation, and inspection. Additional protections for product and personnel, in support of OCC, according to 29CFR1910.217, include: machine hard guarding that permits pass-through of materials while guarding operators from contact with machine hazards.

  • Off-spec Package Contents:
    The contents of the package are unsalable but still suitable for recovery; such contents may be out of weight, color, or other specification tolerance. Reclaiming, off-spec contents reduces material loss and improves total process efficiency.
